Millions of people work with computers every day. This image illustrates simple, inexpensive principles that will help you create a safe and comfortable computer workstation. There is no single “correct” posture or arrangement of components that will fit everyone. However, there are basic design goals to consider when setting up a computer workstation or performing computer-related tasks.
Here are a few additional tips to keep in mind once you’ve set-up your ergonomic workstation.
- Use arm rests.
- Place the lumbar support slightly below the waist line.
- Adjust the height of the chair so your feet can rest completely on the floor.
- Allow 1-3 inches between the edge of the seat and the back of your knees.
- Use a high back chair that supports your shoulder blades if at all possible
- Position your hips so that they are slightly higher than your knees while your feet are flat on the floor.
- Don’t keep your feet flat on the floor. Move them around often. Use a foot rest if you have one, but only part of the time. Do NOT cross your ankles.
- Lean back slightly. Leaning the trunk back to somewhere between 100-130 degrees from parallel to the floor will open up the hips and ease pressure on the pelvis. I like 104 degrees myself. Make sure your chair back will support your shoulders at this angle while still providing good lumbar support.
- Hold your head slightly up so that it is roughly perpendicular to the floor.
- Let your upper arms hang naturally from your shoulders.
- Let your lower arms rest on the arm rests of your chair either parallel or slightly below, to the floor.
- Keep your wrists straight.
- Take frequent breaks. 10 minutes for every hour of work and 30 second micro-breaks every 10 minutes is a good schedule.
- Stretch during those breaks.
- Change your position frequently. Move your feet, lift your arms, adjust your hips, and just make sure to subtly alter your posture continuously throughout the work day.
The primary function of the human nervous system is to receive input from the internal and external environment through receptors, and respond through the modulation of muscular and autonomic strategies. This allows for sensory feedback to produce a subsequent response….IN ENGLISH, you feel the hot stove and you immediately take your hand away. You are falling off the curb and your ankle is twisting and you correct for this and catch yourself. It is important to recognize two things, first the GREATEST number of NERVE receptors are found in the JOINTS of the SPINE and in the muscles. They are organized from the top down, with a higher neurological priority in the upper body than the lower body. This is why we play piano with our fingers and not our feet. In total, the sensory input to the BRAIN is dependent upon the degree of stimulation of the JOINT and MUSCLE receptors. AKA- If you don’t use it you lose it! Second, THE HUMAN NERVOUS SYSTEM IS ALMOST COMPLETELY RECEPTOR DRIVEN. However, just because the receptors are present, does not mean they are always functional. In order for a receptor to send a signal, it must be stimulated to “threshold” if the threshold is met the signal is fired fully and completely. Example: “I can hear you just fine.” If threshold is not met, there can be no signal fired and the system remains subdued. Example: “What did you say? I can’t hear you.” This leads to an inadequate degree of stimulation into the nervous system to both excitatory (Example:”I can play all day”) but also to those areas that are inhibitory (“I wish. I. could lower my blood pressure”). Or (“I wish this pain in my face would stop hurting even though there is nothing physically poking me right now to produce this excruciating pain!”). A nervous system whose receptors are adequately stimulated provides for an accurate sensory input, and a properly modulated response. (“Thanks for the adjustment Doc! I feel great!”). However, one that is functionally compromised can only respond in an erroneous fashion (I don’t know why I feel bad and have no energy); there is no other option. JOINT DYSFUNCTION contributes to an abnormal sensory input, a resultant unnatural motor response via a lack of modulatory controls. This creates further BIZARRE sensory feedback. It means you may continue to have pain and suffering in the absence of painful stimuli. You may have a whole host of problems stemming from loss of normal range of motion in your spine which again has the highest population of receptors in your cervical spine which drive the sensory, motor, and autonomic nervous system! Phew! Thank God we have Atlas Orthogonal to activate the highest population of mechanoreceptors found anywhere in the body….Cervical number one found at the base of the skull….
